Hello. My name is B. and I will talk with you about one of the most beautiful and cheap holiday spent by me and my wife in the Aegean Sea, namely our Thassos Travel. Thassos Island is the most northern island of the Aegean Sea and is nearly round, with 22 km from east to west and 26 km from north to south.
There is a road like a belt around the island, very close to beaches and is about 90 km in length. It is an island of rare beauty and fascinating history, dubbed by locals and "Emerald Isle". Whatever your tastes and preferences, you will find this island is perfect. Whether you love the nightlife, or you're a lover of nature and tranquility, you will be able to visit places that maybe do not even have dreamed. It is one of the islands which led me to go back to the Mediterranean every year to spend my vacation on a Mediterranean Island, until I will visit all of them. When I said I spend my vacation on an island, I said that I will visit the island as much as possible, so that at the end of the travel I can say that I saw the entire
island and not just a part of it, that is to make the most of all I can give it. I do not like to sit in one place all the time, seeing only 200 sqm of sand, and then say I was there. So I'll start with the beginning, which is how I started preparing my Thassos Travel.
After a thorough search on the internet I noticed that the distance between my home town and the island of Thassos is only 734 km, and the costs of fuel and highway tolls and ferry would be 167 euros round trip. This amount was calculated using ViaMichelin, passing through Sofia. The idea of ??going with my car seemed a little adventurous and dangerous but I continued the documentation. Also from ViaMichelin I learned it would be about 12 hours of driving, which seemed not very much. The big advantages of driving your own car would be: you are not forced to rent a car, you can accommodate anywhere you like, you can get your luggage more and more like lounges or tent, you can
stay or leave as while you have money, you can get your canned food with you, if you hook up with two friends so that it fills the car you can share transportation, you can buy bigger things from there, and others you'll find them in this story.
I found a few sights that I was interested, namely: Limenas Archaeological Museum, archaeological sites and Alyki Limenas Museum, Kallirachi Popular Museum of Skala Potamias, Vaghis castle in Potos, Skala Sotir, the monastery Sf.Pantelimon, Archangel Michael Alyki and about 10 famous beaches.
We were fortunate because we've raised three families in two cars so we will be able to share transportation costs by three, and not pressured by any agency or plane.
So in one morning at 6 o'clock we jump in a car with all the luggage, I did fill the fuel tank to the first gas station. Normally, a fuel tank is enough for the way to island, and my advice is to be concerned if the fuel is cheaper in countries that are along your way. Being quite freely, I did less than an hour to douane, where we stopped just before the border, to insurers kiosks, and we bought travel insurance. This insurance cost about
station. Normally, a fuel tank is enough for the way to island, and my advice is to be concerned if the fuel is cheaper in countries that are along your way. Being quite freely, I did less than an hour to douane, where we stopped just before the border, to insurers kiosks, and we bought travel insurance. This insurance cost about 4 euros per person and about 10 euros per car, that for a period of 14 days. We crossed Bulgaria in about 7 hours because I preferred to go slowly than to spend money on radar fines. Roads in Bulgaria are good, I had not been stopped by police crew even though I saw a lot, and I stopped just a couple of times to two or three petrol station. Pass through customs are happened very quickly, we hardly felt. In Greece we only went on the highway and only 150 km / h.
On many websites I found information that ferry should be taken from Kavala but it is a wrong information becouse there is no ferry from Kavala to Thassos. From Kavala must go about 50 km to Keramoti where you'll get the ferry to Thassos. As useful information need to know that in Keramoti is the airport for Thassos Island, an airport that can be see from the highway. If you exit the highway on the right point, it should be impossible not to reach the ferry port. When you reach the ferry you will search to see where the cars tail starts, and will place your car at the end of the tail. It is impossible not to see the tail because it is usually at least 100 cars. The Ferry travel from morning until late evening every 30 minutes. Ferry coming into port, let down access hatch, and when it is your turn to pay a man who will break a ticket machine and one ticket for each person. As cost was 3 euros and 8 euros per person for a one-way car. People who are in the car are asked to alight from the car and get on the ferry on foot, leaving only the car driver who will take the car ferry and where it is shown by those who deal with this. Everything is progressing very quickly and very well-organized. People can climb climb down the ferry's upper terraces, where you can find bars and benches placed in the shade or sun. I thought bars were a bit expensive, that same coffee you buy 1 euro in port before inbarcare 4 euros you will find at the bars on the ferry. You will find all the comforts needed for a trip about 40 minutes, but will say from personal experience that
you will sit on the edge of a terrace and you'll throw the food dish accompanying seagulls and seagulls escape their fish will be eaten very that will go great along with you. Travel by ferry is a dream. You may want to reach a pair of polarized glasses to better see the fish in water that usually forms a ball of 2-3m in diameter around a piece of bread thrown to you.
You'll see that 40 minutes pass very soon, if you do grab a few pictures and enjoy the view. After 30 minutes, you'll see how close Thassos Town Thassos and slowly (local name is Limenas) begins to show its beauty and exotic colors. Landing boarding is done in reverse, and you wake up meet colorful port with more boats and many travel agents, who will be making that same kind of deals. My recommendation is to not buy anything from these travel agents for any search you'll find the most in any city where you go, but maybe even at half price. If you will not print a map of the island home, you can leave the port and you will surely find a map to the store on the route, but will cost about 5-7 euros. As informative note, landing took place at around 17.
